The SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE 2010 came about from a commitment by the Government of Spain together with the Government of the United States to organize the competition in Europe, in accordance with the ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ signed by both governments on the October 18, 2007.
LUMENHAUS was part of the Technology Policy Exhibition sponsored by the Congressional Internet Caucus in the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington D.C. Other presenters included Google, Microsoft, AT&T, Motorola, Nokia, Lockheed/Martin, Sony, Verizon and others. This event is the largest technology exhibition on Capitol Hill and Virginia Tech was the only university invited. Designed to demonstrate emerging Internet technologies that shape Congressional policy making, the exhibition provides Members of Congress the opportunity to put their hands on the technologies that are changing our lives and influencing policy.
After negotiating a maze of permits, contracts and agreements, the LUMENHAUS was placed on Duffy Plaza in Times Square opposite the TKTS ticket booth. Public tours attracted thousands of New Yorkers to learn about energy, sustatinbility and the new dwelling. A presentation was held at the Hafele Showroom at Madison Park to a standing room crowd of New York architects. The house aired on Good Morning America with Sam Champion on January 28.
For three weeks in October 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy will host the Solar Decathlon—a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design.

Exhibition presenting Responsive Architecture as the focus of LUMENHAUS. The initial working prototype of the Eclipsis System demonstrated autonomous components made from industrialized processes that also evoke a sense of elegance and beauty.
Exhibition in the Materials and Processes section of ICFF demonstrated new technologies of fabrication. Industrialized Furniture explores form giving properties involving emerging processes and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines in conjunction with the development of LUMENHAUS.
A local event to promote awareness of green models of building among area residents. Opening at 8am with a free EXPO featuring local green businesses and organizations as well as presentations from local experts, residents of the NRV could then tour local energy efficient homes, including a certified Earthcraft Community and older home retrofits, a solar greenhouse a three story yurt and a straw bale house. Solar decathletes Corey and Alden were on hand with a scale model of LUMENHAUS to answer questions about the home and energy efficient technologies.

Tim Kaine’s Commission on Climate Change, visited Virginia Tech to tour the solar house. nt of Energy Solar Decathlon. The Virginia Tech Solar Decathlon student team and lead faculty — Robert Schubert, associate dean of research; Robert Dunay, the T. A. Carter Professor of Architecture; and Joseph Wheeler, associate professor of architecture presented the house in its current stage of construction.
SEJ's 18th annual conference brought together environmental policymakers and activists from every point of view for more than four days of face-to-face meetings with the world's most experienced and energetic environmental journalists.
Ticket Sales began in November 2008 and continued through February 2009. In March, the winning ticket was drawn by Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Preston Bryant during his visit to Virginia Tech. Drawing of winning ticket took place on March 20th and the winner presented with the car on April 10th.
The car being raffled was a two-seat GEM e2 produced by Daimler-Chrysler. It is street legal and, because it uses no gas, costs about $60 per year to operate. The GEM e2 produces no emissions and can be charged on any regular household outlet. Tickets were sold for $10 each; the team raised nearly $10,000 for their project. All proceeds went to support the team’s Solar Decathlon project.
The raffle was conducted through the American Institute of Architecture Students.
A lecture and exhibition featuring sustainable aspects of the house were presented at the statewide convention of the American Institute of Architects.
